911 Targa
This 1972 911 Targa from the Blood Moon crash landed at Area51Werks one cold and snowy winter. This Long nose was abused by a number of shops over its life. There were 10 paint jobs stacked one on top of another. When Exposed they looked like the rings of Saturn. One of the mysteries that scares off most shops is removing the Targa Glass.
Parts were sourced to restore the typical rust issues these early long nose cars exhibit.
Extensive rust repair was part of the resurrection. During the autopotsy more improper repairs were discovered. More open holes and damaged metal were repaired by the same primitive techniques. Fortunately decomposition was not the result and the factory rocker panel was saved. The doors were not so lucky to survive years of owner neglect and abuse by inexperienced repair people.
The transformation continued with the addition of a 4130 inner bumper and a fiber glass bumper. More color was added and the resurrection continued.
Again notice the red paint that needed to be stripped from ever detail. Every panel had dents filled and drilled with body filler and in the end the rear Targa glass was installed using a strap over the glass and a double rope technique. Over time Area51Werks was able to transform this badly abused and rare 1972 911 with the final piece of the puzzle. A 3.0 from a later car.

Deep in the bunker the autotopsy began. The easiest way to remove the paint was with a heat gun. Big hot rubbery sheets of thick mistakes were painstakingly stripped exposing primitive repair techniques from another time.
Some parts like this weather strip retainer were fabricated and spot welded in like the factory part. Body filler was dug out of rust holes and metal welded in for a proper repair. The fenders as well as the doors were drilled full of holes leaving body filler rivets dangling through the back side of the metal like little candle wicks. I call these California rivets.
After months of experimentation and assimilation the long nose started a transformation.
Red paint covered everything. Even the trim. More transformational work commenced including updating the interior from a boring tan to an slick black leather.
